Site preparation is an important aspect of cultivating successful pine tree seedlings. Seedlings require adequate sunlight and nutrients to become established. Appropriate herbicide application better ensures healthy and maturing seedlings by controlling competing vegetation such as hardwoods, muscadine and green briar vines, and Chinese privet, one of the worst invasive plants in the South.
Numerous studies have taken place over the last several decades that prove herbicide application prior to planting is a contributing factor to a successful stand.
Herbicide application should take place during the growing season and again as pine seedlings are between one and three years old to control the competing hardwood trees and herbaceous weeds.
Specialty Reforestation applies herbicides by skidder, drone, or backpack spray crew.
Band spraying: The application of a path of herbicide about 2 feet wide along the line of planted seedlings. This can be accomplished using a backpack sprayer or a ground-based spraying apparatus attached to a vehicle (tractor, skidder, 4-wheeler, etc.).
Broadcast spraying: The application of herbicide to the entire planted area by ground using state-of-the-art technical support equipment to prevent off-target application of herbicides.
Drone Spraying: This application method streamlines efficiencies, increases production, and creates a better work environment for employees. Drone sprayer application allows us to service more customers and leaves the land undisturbed by heavy equipment. There is a rigorous application and licensing process on the Federal and State levels to operate an agricultural sprayer drone.
Benefits of Drone Spraying:
Reduced Production Interruptions: Drone spraying can significantly reduce production interruptions caused by heavy equipment downtime and repair. Drones are generally more reliable and have lower maintenance requirements compared to heavy machinery, ensuring that operations can continue without major interruptions.
Minimal Land Disturbance: Drones are lightweight and do not physically touch the ground, which means they leave minimal to no impact on the land. This is especially advantageous in muddy areas where heavy equipment can create ruts and damage the terrain.- Improved Efficiency: Drone technology allows for precise and targeted spraying, reducing waste of resources such as herbicides. This precision leads to increased efficiency in the application process.
Employee Well-being: Creating a better work environment for employees is crucial for their job satisfaction and productivity. By reducing exposure to chemicals and minimizing the physical demands of operating heavy equipment, drone spraying can contribute to a safer and more comfortable workplace for Specialty Reforestation’s employees. - Environmental Benefits: Drone spraying can also have environmental benefits by reducing the overall use of herbicides and minimizing the environmental impact of forestry operations. This aligns with sustainable forestry practices and enhances the company's reputation as an environmentally responsible organization.
